Restoring after a loss
Older backups can be thinned out over time. A well-labeled backup saves a frantic hour later. Label backups with the date and the version. Balance the cost of storage against the value of history.
Keep the restore steps written down and up to date. Note how long a restore takes so there are no surprises later. A rehearsed recovery is a calm one. The person doing the restore may not be the person who set it up.
Check the version matches, or read the upgrade notes. The tool picks up the restored configuration on the next run. Restoring is copying the configuration directory back and running the tool. When in doubt, restore to the same version that made the backup.
